Teaching Resources: www.youdomagic.com

On-Line teaching resources in General

Magic has never been easier to learn. We have magazines, books, DVDs, Videos, local stores, online stores and online resources to name but a few.
As we are now firmly in the age of the World Wide Web, the online resource is becoming more and more popular method, and Dan Turcotte’s site, www.YouDoMagic.Com is a perfect example of what this kind of magic teaching resource has to offer.
Some of the advantages of buying lessons from an online resource are that you get immediate gratification and you only have to buy the specific bits and pieces you are looking for. In many cases (and www.youdomagic.com is one such case) It also has the advantage of consisting of both the written word (pdf) and a video clip.

I am living in Sweden and we are using the PAL system for color TV. I have a DVD built into the TV set.

I ordered the DVD set despite the statement about NTSC players. When I received the DVDs, I plugged one in and it worked perfectly.

My impression, from what I have seen so far, is that the material itself is based on mostly wellknown routines and sleights, but the focus is on teaching in a very clear and detailed way, the whole chain from sleigt to routine to performing in a genuine environment with normal (shy, reluctant, curious etc) spectators.
The impromptu aspect is enhanced by the refreshing sparsity of gaffs and clever gadgets.
I wish the sound in the performance clips were better, but I guess this is difficult in a restaurant environment.
I would say that these DVDs are of good value for beginners to intermediate performers, particularly for us in the big group of table hoppers and party entertainers.

Posted: Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:33 am    Post subject: YouDoMagic.com Agreed. Dan's site, YouDoMagic.com, is a treasure chest - and perhaps the closest thing to having a visual version of the Royal Road to Card Magic by Hugard & Braue and the Amateur Magician's Handbook by Hays. Besides showing "the secret" to each trick, Dan prompts us and demonstrates p e r f o r m a n c e . It is a thing of beauty to watch him in action in the restaurant - his misdirection is something to emulate (not imitate, of course). I could complain (gripe, whine, groan) about the Quicktime format, which doesn't like Windows XP (or vice versa) and skips from time to time; or I could whine (complain, gripe, groan) that occasionally the music on a video overpowers Dan's instructions. Because the sheer value of these excellent tutorials is far beyond the price Dan charges. And I'd highly recommend buying his packages -- it's possible to get all these tricks (HOURS of routines) for about $1 per trick. (Be SURE and print out every PDF booklet; it's invaluable to keep them open while watching the videos.)
Dan's tutorials overpower almost every DVD or videotape out there. If he EVER creates a DVD, I'll be first in line for a copy.

I have purchased over 6 videos and effects from the site so far and have always felt to have recieved my money's worth from Dan's site and them some. I am a serious beginner , practicing almost every night with cards, coins and other paraphanelia. I like Dan's approach showing you non-rehearsed( on the audience's part) performance video in different venues. His freeze framing LIVE performances adds volumes of information on how PERFORM a certain effect and not just DO an effect. His e-book/lesson/live approach is very effective. I do have one beef ( chicken, pork, lamb?) with Dan, he needs to make a single DVD tying all the routines and effects together , making a forest from all the trees. He has more than enough great material to make a fabulous DVD set geared to the serious beginner/intermediate. And he has enough insight as a Professional to help the Newbie understand the pyschology and audience management that is neccessary for Magic to truly occur.

Just want to mention that aside from a great site Dan is a genuinley nice person who has a great deal of skill in magic. I was lucky enough to have spent several of our ledgendary "Thursday" nights out with Dan and the rest of the thursday night group when he lived up in the North East. He is a great inspiration and has my upmost admiration. Keep up the good work Dan!

With 16 Misdirection Power Statements and Fine
Difficulty: 6; It's not that it's difficult to DO, it's that you need practice to make it invisible.
Out of 10: a solid 9.5 -- If I weren't butterfingered, I'd rate it 10.
Comments: This sleight has been around a lonnnnng time, and the very best card magicians are usually the only ones using it. Why? Because it's difficult to explain and because it takes practice. If you don't look natural while doing this, you're sunk.
Dan takes the time to explain the Top Change in the simplest, most basic terms. And he shows how it can be used in real situations. That's the beauty of combining print and video; each "covers" for the other's weaknesses and each is used for its greatest strengths.
For instance, Dan spends a page talking about misdirection - and giving some clues as to just how he directs his audience's attention to anywhere-but-there. After reading his clues and directions, play the video and see just how he applies these principles and statements. Especially watch the "card under glass" segment in which he really does tell them what he does!
I'm not going to say you'll be performing this flawlessly within 10 minutes of reading/viewing Dan's work. I will say that you'll have all the knowledge and impetus to rehearse this sleight until you can use it for oh-so-many routines. (It can really make your Ambitious Card routine sing!)

Just want to say what a class site - easy to follow instructions - PDF and movie files - downloaded the Perfect Finger Penetration amongst others and for such a simple trick, all I can say is WOW! - Who'd have thought you could amaze so many people with an elastic band. Good friendly contact from Dan Turcotte himself and a site I'll be using many times in future.

Cardtoon Routine with Auto Re-Set Sequence
Magic that you can download from the internet is usually disappointing. Some of the PDF docs out there are little more than exposure of secrets with no real educational value if you really want to perform the effect. Some video downloads give you only the same material you could get from books or DVD's, and they cost more.
This routine, available at http://www.youdomagic.com/cardtoon.html is a welcome change from that. Dan Turcotte gives you both a PDF document with clear color photographs, a teaching video, and two videos of Dan's routine being performed live in the restaurant he works in.
You have to have Cardtoon 1 or 2. (Dan teaches using Cardtoon 2, which I think is superior to the first one.)
If you like Cardtoon 2, and could use some detailed and clear instruction on how to use it in the real world of restaurant magic, this is for you. Dan is a good teacher, as well as a funny and entertaining magician. If you haven't mastered the instant reset of this effect, you're missing most of its impact. Cardtoon done once is interesting. The spectators will usually suspect that there is some kind of force involved, even though there isn't. Cardtoon done twice, immediately, with a different card selected, is a mystery. Dan will teach you how to do that.

Equally import to restaurant workers, he teaches how to perform this effect without using any table space, or risking getting your Cardtoon cards wet or damaged.
I won't use all of the ideas Dan presents, but I have learned some that I will use. It also came with some nice bonus material, a rubber band penetration effect.

Overall: 8/10
Does what it sets out to do -- make Cardtoon (either version) into a workable restaurant routine. If you are a restaurant magician, or aspire to be one, this is definitely worth the money.
While you're there, check out Dan's other offerings. He has some excellent magic at very reasonable prices

YouDoMagic.com : Sponge Ball Magic: Full Routine
By Dan Turcotte
From: www.youdomagic.com Price: $8.00
This e-book is quite possibly the most thorough and detailed piece of Magic literature that I have come across in relation to its content and “skill level”. It’s a fantastic resource for learning a sponge ball routine and seasoned or beginner sponge ball workers will find something of use within it’s 11 pages.
Table of contents
Introduction and Contents
The Routine (4 separate stages!)
Sleight of Hand Components (5 separate sleights!)
Credits
Introduction
The Introduction to this routine actually contains a short sponge ball patter in itself so there’s an added bonus already! Dan also includes various tips such as assistant selection in the introduction which sets the mood for the rest of
the e-book.
The Routine
The four stages of the routine (which I won’t go into here, it’d spoil the surprise!) take up the bulk of the e-book and rightly so. Dan has covered every aspect of this routine and each move, word and action are all documented in detail. Through out the routine pictures provide an exact view of what it should look like. Arrows have also been included on the page to link the words to the pictures. The patter for the routine is also included and for clarity’s sake it has been highlighted in red so the magician knows exactly what to say and when. Also what the spectator sees and what the magician is secretly doing have been colour coded which helps to distinguish between all three components of the routine.
The routine itself is clear and thorough and has all the trade marks of a good sponge ball routine, both from the perspective of the spectator and the performer. But the fun doesn’t stop there, oh no!
Sleight of Hand Components
Dan has also included thorough explanations of all and any sleight of hand which would be necessary in a sponge ball routine. These explanations are clear, precise and undoubtedly hugely valuable for any sponge ball routine and especially this one.
Overall: 9/10
Conclusion: If you like sponge ball routines there’s no reason why this routine shouldn’t be part of your Library, it’s great!

I also learned CMH from Dan's site. Later I saw an explanation from Penguin. I have to say that Dan's product was vastley superior to Penguin's. Dan gave some valuable pointers that Penguin just didn't.
If you haven't yet, check out his site now.

I am not a card magician, my technical skill when it comes to cards is... how shall I say, Minimal. The pass is something I have tried to learn from various books and videos without much success. Dan's Ebook is very clearly layed out and easy to follow. I can see immediatly where I was going wrong before. I have only read it though once or twice so I cannot do the pass yet (obviously, Sorry to any who thought this Ebook gave you the amazing ability to perform a perfect pass within seconds) but it will be much easier for me to learn now.
Thanks Dan. Keep up the good work.

Yep have to agree Orion for the price of this trick it is fantastic.
I also have the Ammar version and although I did initially learn it from Ammar's book. It wasn't until I saw it on you do magic that I was really able to put it together. This is a great site and well worth looking at.I have several other downloads from the site and have not been disapointed.

CMH Version from Dan Turcotte
this one comes with 2 videos showing the actual performace and an ebook. The video are not as clear as they were taken on site probably with amateur video material but they are clear enough to see it happen. The download size is more reasonnable for slower links (I live in thailand and bandwith here is still 32Kb/s when you are lucky!)
The ebook looks tedious but is actually all you need to learn the trick. I thought I would have a look in case Dan did it differently and HE DOES... this is amazing and the movement as taught by Dan is a natural movement that covers the 2 sections in one. Within minutes, I was performing it seamlessly and my wife who is my first critic, knowing exactly what I was doing, help me quickly make it look natural and invisible...
The ebook from Dan's site looked a bit complex and I was thinking why the hell do you need so much text for something that you could show in a movie... Dan was right, following his 2 page diagrams, it simply happens... without effort
Dan also has a finish with 2 and 4 elastic bands worth looking at. He does not have the linking bit, so maybe he should create an additional lesson with it.
This is how the same trick can be made easy to learn with the right explanation or approach, I recommend to buy it from Dan and for those who have the other version and are having difficulty, get the one from Dan, it is great and will help you get better and more natural.

Posted: Wed Dec 15, 2004 11:11 am : Push Press Card Control
I've just received this download from youdomagic.com and it works exactly as advertised. It is an elegant control and one that I have not encountered anywhere else.

I don't think any intermediate to advanced level card worker can afford to be without this control in his arsenal. extremely useful for times when specs want to see their chosen card truly being pushed into the deck, and you are not able to keep track of it.

As Dan writes on the site, it is almost a trick in itself, and it's going to be my secret weapon from now on. Especially good for ambitious card routines. Recommended.

I just got this recently from www.youdomagic.com Of all the retention of vision coin vanishes I've tried, I like this one the best. It's not too difficult, and really gives a nice flash of the coin as it goes into the hand.

The others I've tried (Bobo's, Ammar, Sankey, etc.) I was never able to get smooth. They always looked fishy when I did them, although others can make them look great. Gone Again really looks as if the coin is going into the hand with no funny business. And it was much easier to master.

Review - April 27, 2004 Card to Pocket 4 times

Hi. I just wanted to share that I've downloaded the card to pocket routine from Dan Turcotte (a member of this forum), from www.youdomagic.com  It was my first time doing a download. Also, I've heard a lot of bad critics from Penguin downloads, so I was a little nervous. But I must say it was better than what I hoped.

Dan pours EVERYTHING in that ebook. He gives not only the method, but lines, patter, tips, advices for different situations and enviroments. I really liked it. It's divided in a brief introduction, the method explanation (with patter and several gags included) and a tips and advices section. The .pdf e-book has about 30 pages. You can also download a movie, seeing the performance live. It's clearly written, even more, its generously written. If you read it, you'll understand what I mean.

The price is more than OK for what you get. I wanted to say all this, because I think that its fair to congratulate a magician that does things right, with care and love. You can see both interwoven along the lesson. We can all read all the threads in this forum criticizing Ellusionist, Penguin, etc. Well, Dan is not like them. That's my point. As Forrest Gump used to said, that's all I have to say about this.

Ring on String routine review

February 15, 2004

Dan, First, this is one of my favorite effects. It's simple, uses lots of audience participation and is extremely portable. I usually use a spectator's ring which means all I need is a bit of string. So here's a review for your Ring on String package... The Ring and String This is a very strong effect.

The magician is able to make a solid ring "melt" off an ordinary string not once or twice, but THREE TIMES. The handling of the first "melt" is very smooth. The magician shows the ring being threaded onto the string fairly then suddenly pulls the ring right through the string. The second "melt" is equally as smooth. Using the assistant's helping hand to pull the ring off the string - presto - the ring is off then suddenly jumps back onto the string. Pure magic.

The final transportation is a great finale. The ring is "tied" onto the magician's hand and the ends of the rope are secured by the assistants. Then 1,2,3 - presto - the ring is heard to penetrate the table and shown to be caught with the magician's free hand. A very convincing climax to a wonderful bit of magic. The PDF book is thorough and well written with excellent step-by-step instructions that, when used in conjunction with the live performance video, are very effective teaching tools. The slow-motion video of the specific moves provides a great view from the magician's point of view of what is actually happening. The use of video greatly enhances the overall lesson. Ring and String is an effect that is sure to please audiences of all ages.

All the best,

The Strike Double Lift review

May 25, 2004

I've just viewed the strike double and all i can say is wow, this is by far the best lesson i have seen, since my purchase of Michael Ammar's easy card magic video 2 and card college about a month ago. I thought I had all the knowledge covered, but this style of lesson is perfect for someone like myself who wants to learn the skills first before learning tricks.

Excellent, please keep up the great work... ps i live in Newcastle and it is in my opinion that we are now the third best party place in the world, you must visit the quay side now. There have been many changes!

Thanks

Ring on String routine review

Hi Dan, just checked out your ring on string tutorial. First of all I have to say that it was fun to watch the two live performance videos. It's very unusual to see magicians doing their material in real life performing conditions so it was interesting to see how you handle the audience and keep their attention.

I enjoyed the routine, it is succinct and well-structured. There are countless ring on string moves but you've taken some of the best and put them together logically. The instructional PDF is clear, easy to follow and well credited. With the materials you have provided it will be easy for any magician to learn this routine and add it to their repertoire.

YouDoMagic site review

March 1, 2004

I think you've got teaching magic down to an art. I've been doing magic on and off again for many years. I used to learn from books which typically weren't as thorough in their descriptions. You've integrated the patter, the moves/sleights, and the whole presentation for each effect. The ebooks and video clips (especially the live restaurant performances) give people a chance to learn all the nuances of performing an effect to entertain people. I'm also amazed at the value of your items.

Most magic DVD's are 25-40 dollars in my area, and have explanations that are no more complete than your packages. I especially like the way you keep it to common props for the effects. Most of the props you use are commonly available to any magician, and the videos are well done, with complete narration as required. The handling of invisible and svengali decks, thumb tips, cards and coins (using sleight of hand), rubber bands provide users with a complete armamentarium of close-up effects that are well taught at a great price. As far as the site goes, the only question I ever had got answered in less than an hour! I've been very happy with what I've ordered and hope you keep up the new additions.

Thanks James

Dear Dan

Oh WOW!!! Oh WOW!!! Oh WOW!!! Oh WOW!!! I just got through the first watching of the entire CD you sent. I've been trying to learn new material from books for years. But I love the Video aspect. Great Tricks, Great instructions, I love the actual audience performance so I could see reaction and angles. Top notch materials. Thank you for sharing this (I know I paid for it, but you made it available) I've done a few of the tricks ie: sponge balls, Hot Rod ,Thumb Tip. But your routines are great. I don't have anyone else within about 2 hours (that I know of anyway) to talk with that actually performs.

There are a few Clowns in the area but I've been their "instructor" for magic, and Balloonology. So the ideas are limited to mine. Only a few That do tricks. Not a lot to learn from. The Clowning is top notch so I am learning Stage Presence and how to improve my comedy stuff. I even came up with a clown character. Fun E Bones is the name.

Sorry, went rambling. Back to your material. Thanks for the info on restaurant work. I noticed that you were filmed at I think it was three different restaurants? When you go to each Manager, do you have a certain routine that you do? I know that you mentioned a new PDF e-book coming. So if I need to wait I can. I can be impatient sometimes. I really want to go as full time as I can as an Entertainer. I know that restaurant work will help lead into more Birthday shows. I'm wanting to get into the Day Care / Preschool market as well. Please let me know when the Restaurant material will be available.

Thank You David Talley

The Push-Press card control review

May 10, 2004

First of all i'd like to say how good Dan is in all he does on this site. The push press card control is definitely one of the more deceptive methods of gaining a break and using it for a control. The method is very devious and would fool magicians aswell as laymen.

The teaching is very good although the method may take a bit of practice you will be doing this within a couple of hours of getting the basics down. All together i would give it 10/10 as it is very very deceptive. All together a great trick.

Review by Dennis Reddyhoff (Trix)

Whoa!! I have been practicing the Double Lift using the Thumb Count method ALL WEEKEND -- and having very little success. (Darned fat thumb!) But using your method, as shown in your new & improved video, I'm already achieving success two out of three times. And this with NO looking at my hands! Thank you! I really want to catch your act, if you're half as good as you appear in your lessons!

Sponge Ball routine review

Dan: January 27, 2004

Thanks for checking. Everything worked out perfectly and actually quicker than I expected. I purchased the sponge ball routine and had the video downloaded to my computer in about 10 minutes. I plan on purchasing more from your site shortly. I really liked the format and the thorough explanation on the video. I have been doing some sponge ball work in my act, but your routine reminded me of some things that I haven't used. I especially like your approach and the way you engage the audience to make them feel part of the "show". Well done.

Thanks again.

The Card Under Glass review

December 14, 2003

Well, I thought since I was breaking ground and downloading my first bit of magic off the net I'd write up a bit of a review for it too! I chanced upon the youdomagic.com website while following a few links one day...and I just had to take a look at the Card Under Glass routine. I must say, what I recieved was a pleasant surprise!

Not only did I get the e-book explaining just how to do the routine, but more importantly I got a video of the routine being performed live for "real" spectators. I say real because these guys aren't paid to be impressed...they REALLY are! And so was I. Although I knew what to expect, I must admit I had to jump back on the video to see it all again! There's a couple of slieghts you'll need to know, but most card fans will have them down pat.

But here's the important part...the slieghts don't make the trick! It's all about performance. I've read a few sections in various books about misdirection, but if you want to see it WORK check out the video! It looks simple when you know how it's done, but that's the great part...it IS simple! A nice effect, a nice piece of misdirection, simple powerful magic! That's what I wanted. And with Card Under Glass I've got a routine I'm looking forward to performing.

The site promises a few more tricks soon, along with the many currently online...and if they're at all like this one, I'll be taking a look for sure. So, if you want a nice peice of straight forward MAGIC (and if you want my two cents worth!) take a look, take a deep breath, and misdirect! Great entertainment, great magic.

Best, Morty.

Why is youdomagic.com so addicting? Well, first of all, the format is perfect for us. It gives you the impression that there are thousands of things to see. Your eyes go crazy, your mind races. But it is not just eye-candy. It is also substance. It's like the gambler finding a sure thing that really is a sure thing. Dan Turcotte is a man of substance. We'll have a Celebrity Interview with him later this week. He cares about magic and does it well. It takes a ton of ability and a ton and a half of confidence to do what he has done.

He is giving his routines for some of the classics of magic for you to learn. Want to learn how to do card to pocket? Crazy Man's Handcuffs? The Best Invisible Deck Routine? You need to click on to www.youdomagic.com. I promise that you will be impressed by the variety and the detail of the routines he provides. Dan has been there and is still there. He does magic and he entertains. In many of the routines, you get to see his performance pieces as well as his instruction. Can I be honest? There are many out there in the web that would take your money and give you nothing. I still have not been able to stop my receding hairline with the mixture of bee pollen and musk oil and I haven't had a date in years that could be more because my wife would frown on it rather than the video tape I ordered on how to "Get Them Girls!" (I have, however, been attracted to musk and flowers).

This site, however, is different. It delivers. Check it out and then meet me in the basement at the church down at Main and 4 th by the Amoco Station and confess that you too are like us.

Review of the Svengali Deck routine:

FromRay: rmisoles@yahoo.com Thu Nov 7 22:15:48 2002

The way Dan teaches live is fantastic the sequencing, logical arrangement, and lecture notes incorporated into the video lessons! The svengali decks one of my favorites, still I'm very much impressed with the routine Dan showed especially the napkin revelation and the counting revelation haven"t used these two in my presentations before.

A beginner watching this video will be immediately raised to expert status once they put the lessons into application. The way I see it, pro and novice would learn a lot from it!

Ray

Review on Invisible Deck:

Another one of my favorites. Each one of us has a „child‰ within, and this trick brings out the best in every persons feelings. Dan illustrates very clearly the basic workings of this trick, and best of all, the routine as presented live. While watching the video, I feel as if I'm one of the spectators and I laughed with them, even caught myself clapping my hands (was a bit embarrassed when my wife suddenly entered my office and found me laughing and clapping all be myself!). This video is a must if one's repertoire includes this killer the invisible deck! Best of all, Dan reveals the secret of making your own invisible deck!

(Why, Dan? You have given too much of yourself.)

I truly appreciate your response to my request even though I overlooked it upon returning home. In fact, while checking my mail, I was on the phone with a friend and I mentioned to him your name and how professional it was for you to remember my request on your own. He was quite pleased to hear this as well and responded the same

I have been working the "Crazy Man's Handcuffs" and I'm getting better, hopefully soon I can make it appear as seamless as you do on your video.

Again, thanks for remembering about me, it does mean something!!

The Pen Through Dollar routine Review

I’ve been doing magic for 2 years now, never have I came across any downloadable teaching videos that goes into so much detail and clarity. Dan Turcotte’s Video Lessons proved to be a quality product and ‘The Pen Penetration’ video lesson itself is no exception. Firstly, everything stated is exactly as described, allowing no falsehoods to complain about. Secondly, the video explains directly, allowing easy absorption and can be replayed over and over again.

This lesson includes different handling and ways to show the effect such as the correct positioning for the pen, methods in doing the effect and best of all, the presentation of this killer effect! A must have video for those who own ‘The Penetration Pen’!

This is something you can't get from books, well done!”

OK.the shuttle ball pass routine download looked good, I was wondering about that pattern!

It's damn trickery, you can use that quote!

This is my review of The Thumb Sweep Classic Pass with Auto Set-up and Insertion

The classic pass is an essential move for all card magicians. This move can be used in numerous ways, including: card to pocket, ambitious card, etc". Do not however expect to learn this move in days or weeks, rather months and years. You will learn the basics soon after reading the PDF and watching the movie. To master this move, however, will take a long time and a lot of dedication and hard work. The PDF teaches you the moves necessary to do the classic pass.

The video helps you learn the classic pass, pointing out important details in performing a clean pass. Also on the video is a move that allows you to place a card in the middle of the deck from the top and be set up for the classic pass. This move can be done without the audience suspecting anything. This could be used in an ambitious card to allow you to pass the card back to the top. Also included is a video that teaches a deceptive classic pass false cut. As long as you do not use this false cut excessively the audience will not realize that it is a false cut. This video/PDF set is an excellent learning tool if you do not already know the pass. Even if you do already know the pass, you might not know the false cut/card insertion method taught on the video.

What a trick.

BTW, thanks for fixing your spelling of the word "restaurant". It was keeping me up at night.

Hey Dan, here is a basic review of "Gone again" multiple use coin vanish.

Effect 4 out of 5 Simple, versatile and effective on any audience. it is always ready if you have access to a coin. With just a few hours of practice you can perform the "Gone again" with ease.

The "Gone again" is simple enough to be added into any coin routine and effective enough to grab their attention.

The only down side is that the principle is so simple that most people with a limited background in magic will be able to figure it out with ease, and therefore copy it. Great effect Dan. great videos, easy to understand, see, and follow throughout the videos. simple and clear the way I like them.

I have commented about your site repeatedly on the Magic Cafe.

I appreciate all you have done for our fraternity, and I really like the stuff you have offered to us.

You are a great guy and a wonderful illusionist. I am especially encouraged by how you have overcome adversity and have continued to be an encourager and teacher to the fraternity and those interested in illusion. Dan, you are a real inspiration to me.

Thanks, personally.
